San Juan Jabloteth Youth teams learn essential Financial Literacy Skills

Thursday 27th March – The Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) has embarked on a significant initiative aimed at fostering financial empowerment among young athletes, in collaboration with the San Juan Jabloteh Sports Club. Through a series of activities, UTC provides invaluable financial education and support to the club’s members.

A key event in this thrust was a Financial Well-Being session held on March 27th at San Juan North Secondary School. Young athletes, including footballers and netballers in the under-17 and under-20 age groups, participated in an engaging session focused on introducing them to the world of investing, goal-setting, and overall financial health.

The interactive discussions were led by UTC’s Chief Financial Officer, Kerri Maharaj, and UTC’s Head Fixed Income Investments, Philip Williams, with Ancil Isaac “Blaze” serving as the host for the afternoon. Mr. Williams engaged the athletes in a practical goal-planning exercise, guiding them through a step-by-step process to define their short-term and long-term financial aspirations, develop actionable plans to achieve them, and explore strategies for effective budgeting and saving. UTC also facilitated and supported the opening of investment accounts for interested students and parents, taking concrete steps to empower them to begin their financial journeys.

In addition to the educational session, UTC demonstrated its support for San Juan Jabloteh on the field. On March 28th, UTC attended and supported the San Juan Jabloteh Team as they played against the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force at the La Horquetta Grounds in the TT Premier Football League.

Going beyond financial literacy, UTC staff members also volunteered to participate in training sessions with the footballers on the field, building camaraderie and promoting fitness.

This partnership between TTUTC and San Juan Jabloteh signifies a commitment to the holistic development of young athletes. It recognizes the importance of financial literacy in building stronger communities and empowering young people to achieve long-term success, both on and off the field.

Maharaj stated, “At UTC, we believe in empowering individuals to take control of their financial futures. Partnering with San Juan Jabloteh Sports Club allows us to provide these young athletes with the knowledge and tools they need to make sound financial decisions, setting them on a path to lifelong financial well-being.”

Nirad Tewarie, Chairman of San Juan Jabloteh Sports Club, stated, “We are thrilled to partner with UTC on this vital initiative. Financial literacy is an essential life skill, and this programme will provide our young athletes with a significant advantage. This initiative with Unit Trust demonstrates a shared commitment to the development of our athletes and our community.”

UTC’s support for San Juan Jabloteh does not end here, as they look forward to future partnerships with the club.
