UTC raises bar on education

April 15th 2015: The Unit Trust Corporation recently partnered with students of St. Joseph’s Convent, San Fernando and Presentation College, Chaguanas on diverse educational projects, aimed at equipping them with life skills and reinforcing positive social interaction.

UTC volunteers collaborated with Presentation College Chaguanas at their 5K and Walk-a-thon, an annual event that is a mainstay on their school calendar.

“Supporting our community schools has always been a focus of the UTC and our annual participation of Presentation College’s walk-a-thon and 5K is a joy for both the Corporation and the staff at our Chaguanas IC. We look forward to any opportunity to contribute to building our community,” said Lisa Hitlal, Manager Chaguanas IC.

Team members assisted with the smooth running of the day’s programme, which included water distribution during races and prizes in Gift of Units to the Under 14, 15, 17 and 20 categories. Funds raised from the event went towards refurbishment of the school’s library and art room.

Ashton Sant, a member of Presentation College’s Alumni, praised the staff of UTC for their participation and community involvement. “It is so heartwarming to know that UTC and its staff continue to support the initiatives of the college and the community at large.

St. Joseph’s Convent San Fernando also received support for their annual Spelling Bee with sponsorship of prizes in Gift of Units to the Senior and Intermediate category of the competition. The competition, now in its third year, was initiated to help students improve their spelling skills, think critically and expand their vocabulary, explained Hazel Montoute, a teacher at the school. “We started this because technology accompanied by spell check and predictive text on computers and phones has made it harder for children to spell on their own and has posed challenges for written exams,” said Ms. Montoute.

Kirby Glace, Assistant Manager, San Fernando Investment Centre said his staff was happy to be a part of the aimed at improving their overall literacy and educational pursuits. Inculcating discipline to learning is something we encourage and continue to support.”

Over $6,000 in sponsorship and Gift of Units certificates was donated to the schools’ educational initiatives. The certificate is a tangible head start to gaining insight into the world of saving and investing.
