Fun in the Sun at St. Mary's Children's Home Thanks to the UTC

Most children spend their August holidays hoping to enjoy outdoor family activities. On Saturday August 9, the 200 children of the St. Mary's Children's Home (SMCH) spent their weekend with the UTC family as the UTC hosted a "Fun Day" for the staff and students at the SMCH grounds.

"We wanted to give the children an opportunity to enjoy some sporting activities and just have a little fun," said Amoy Van Lowe, Chief Marketing Officer. "When we shared the idea with the UTC team - the suggestions just kept coming and we are all thrilled to be working with the SMCH to host this great fun day and to simply make a difference in these children’s lives." 81 UTC team members signed up to work at the Fun Day - doing everything from overseeing (and participating in) the games and serving lunch, to cleaning up after the event. UTC team members even provided DJ services and their football team, the UTC Spartans had a hearty game of football with the St. Mary’s Children’s Home boys.

“The football was fun! It felt real good to play against a REAL football side," said one the SMCH boys that tackled the UTC Spartans football team as part of the day's festivities. The sporting talents of the St. Mary’s Children impressed the UTC athletes, "Even though we (the Spartans) won the football – these children are serious about their sports and that’s a good thing" said Hector Small, UTC volunteer at the activity and member of the UTC Spartans football team. The children did not just play football. Lively games of volleyball, basketball and musical chairs were enjoyed while others took part in board games.

The “house mother” of the home, SMCH Manager, Ms. Pat Martin was thrilled the UTC team planned and hosted the event for the children at the SMCH. "It is rare you get a ‘personal touch’ from a big company like the UTC,” she said, “The (UTC) staff just wanted to help and they treated us like family. They actually bar-b-qued and interacted with our children – it was great for them (the children) to get outside and have some fun – the activity was a real blessing.”

So what did the children think? "This was the BEST Saturday we’ve had in a long time,” said one of the younger girls at the home. The sentiment was shared by the UTC team. “Activities like these aren’t just about having fun,” said Cheryl Ann Philips Gonzales, UTC volunteer, “It really opens your eyes to how just by doing something small like playing musical chairs or sharing a game of football can make a big difference in a child’s life – and the life of us adults as well!”

The UTC will continue to assist various communities through their ongoing staff driven Community Outreach Programme. Persons wishing to assist the St. Mary’s Children’s Home can contact 640-2806/6767.
