UTC Launches 17th Annual Schools' Investment Game

The Trinidad and Tobago Unit Trust Corporation launched its 17th edition of the Schools’ Investment Game (S.I.G.) at its Chaguanas Branch on Wednesday January 16, 2008. This initiative has now become a fixture on the secondary school calendar throughout Trinidad and Tobago and tangibly speaks to the success of UTC’s commitment to financial literacy especially to the youths of our nation.

he UTC School’s Investment Game was designed to provide students of the nation’s secondary schools with practical exposure to money management and capital markets. The Game also encourages participating students to become familiar with mutual fund products and the local stock market.

In her remarks at the S.I.G. launch, Ms. Amoy Van Lowe, UTC’s Chief Marketing Officer encouraged the students to remember that cultivating healthy investment habits make many of life’s dreams come true.

Motivational speaker at the S.I.G. launch, Mr Barrington Thomas, gave an inspirational speech to the eager competitors urging them to increase their financial literacy. “We aggressively seek to advance our financial intelligence and money management skills,” he said.

Each team will be allotted a notional sum of $20,000 for investment during the thirteen (13) week period of the Game. The team who has been able to astutely manage their investments and generate the highest return will be declared the winner. Prizes valued at over TT $20,000 will be awarded to the top teams including TT $300 in Growth & Income Fund units for each member of the winning team. The recognition and reward goes even further as the teacher of the winning team also receives a prize.

To assist in the professional development of the students, the UTC will also provide each member of the winning team with the opportunity to gain first hand experience by participating in a two-month internship program at the UTC.

The UTC remains committed to developing the financial literacy of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and will continue to place greater emphasis on the youths of our country.
