The 9 week Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) sponsored literacy improvement programme exposed the students to intense activities designed to improve reading, spelling and auditory skills. In addition to sponsoring the A.R.R.O.W. programme at the La Puerta Government Primary School, the UTC took a “hands on” approach with this project. UTC staff members from the West Moorings Customer Service Centre visited the school weekly to allow the children to practice their reading skills by reading aloud to the staff members. “That extra attention by the UTC staff really helped make the programme at La Puerta Government Primary a success,” said A.R.R.O.W. Country Director, Cornelia Bonterre. “By having a child read aloud for just 15 minutes each day can increase not only a child’s reading skills, but boost their self confidence as well.” At the graduation ceremony it was clear the programme had an impact on the parents as well. “This programme made a real difference in my son’s life and mine,” said one proud parent. In her remarks at the graduation ceremony, Amoy Van Lowe UTC Chief Marketing Officer encouraged all the parents to continue to help their children succeed by reading with them at home. She also gave the children a tip on how to achieve “Read, read and read some more!” Each of the 68 children in the programme received a book personally selected by a UTC staff member to continue to practice their reading and a T-shirt that says: Read, it’s the cool thing to do! Three outstanding students also received special book prizes as follows:
As part of its ongoing commitment to build the communities they serve, the UTC will continue to work with the La Puerta Government Primary School and has already once again partnered with A.R.R.O.W. on a similar programme in San Fernando.
